Fate

13. December 2026 17:00 Uhr

The Bläserphilharmonie Aachen dedicates its current program to the theme of “Fate”. The concert features symphonic wind music that explores existential turning points, emotional wounds, and personal resilience.

The focal point of the evening lies on two works that process this theme musically: The “Third Symphony” by James Barnes reflects on a personal stroke of fate for the composer, tracing a path from tragedy to renewed hope. The piece “Scars” by Julio Domingo for soloist and orchestra deals with emotional scars and their healing process. The concert opens with the composition “Poème du feu” by Ida Gotkovsky.

The evening’s soloist for “Scars” is Hans Nickel. Born in Kerkrade in the Netherlands, he studied euphonium, tuba, and conducting in Maastricht. Starting in 1986, he served as the principal tuba player of the WDR Symphony Orchestra for several decades, and he also teaches as a professor at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne.

The concert is conducted by the Dutch conductor and horn player Harry Vorselen. Also a graduate of the conservatory in Maastricht, he initially worked as the principal horn player of the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra, among others. As a conductor, he has led the Junge Bläserphilharmonie NRW since 2012 and also became the chief conductor of the Aachener Studentenorchester in 2022.
