With the programme “Warm & Cold”, we embark this time on a journey introduced by Lili Boulanger’s “D´un Matin de Printemps”. In the arrangement by François Branciard, the first half of our concert begins on a fresh spring morning. The birds are chirping and you can sense how the rays of the rising sun bathe the world in golden light. But which city is illuminated by this sun? The answer is provided by our next work, “Spartacus” by Jan Van der Roost. In true warlike fashion of ancient Greece, battle is waged in this piece, with armies meeting in an almost majestic clash. Accompanied by brass and percussion, Van der Roost paints a picture of striking power, but also of bloodshed. This piece is followed by Pedro Salinas Robles’ “Concert for Symphonic Band”, after which we head into the interval. This work is the set piece for the Italian wind orchestra competition “Flicorno d´Oro”, in which we hope to participate in March.
After the interval, “Stjärna” by Sander Van Dorst returns — a piece that will be familiar to all concert-goers from our summer concerts. “A Flemish Christmas” then leads us into the pre-Christmas season. A little Christmas market atmosphere and the scent of mulled wine fill the air, and you feel like snuggling up at home with a cup of hot chocolate. That is, if it weren’t for a pesky fly that, in Oscar Navarro’s “The Fly”, tempts many a conductor into overly daring manoeuvres.
